Overview

This project reimagines Apple’s Legal webpage with a core mission: to transfer power back to users by making legal and data policies more transparent, digestible, and empowering.

The original page, though comprehensive, felt opaque and difficult to navigate for everyday users. My redesign introduces a clearer hierarchy, accessible language, and interactive elements that demystify Apple’s policies and put users in control of their data choices.

PROBLEM STATEMENT

How might we reimagine a webpage to create more transparent data?

Design Solution

Reorganized Information.

In this redesign, users are able to easily access Apple's data policies without an overload of information.

Information is reorganized into easily understood sections, with highlighted summaries, streamlining the ease of understanding.

Streamlined Navigation.

As users access the legal page, they are shown a new condensed navigation bar limiting their information overload.

The implementation of a search bar also allows users to easily discover their desired information with ease.

User Research

Remote User Testing.

I asked 4 users to read through the terms and conditions of 2 separate webpages (Spotify and Apple), while recording their screens and voices to understand the context of their emotions and behaviours while scrolling through the comparative webpages.

I also asked them to find two specific parts of the pages to understand the differences in difficulty of finding information. This would allow me to understand the layouts, writing and functions that users prefer and which functionality to prioritize over others.

Users said that Apple's webpage was more difficult to navigate.

Users said that Apple's webpage was more difficult to navigate.

Particularly while using the Apple terms and conditions users noted that while the paragraphs weren’t too lengthy to read, it was difficult to find the specific information they needed. Comparatively, users were able to quickly find the “Your account” section of Spotify’s terms and conditions quite quickly.

This proves the importance of sectioning off specific portions of the terms of use for users, since it makes it easier for the information to be discovered.

The second discovery found through my preliminary research revealed the significance of a search bar on the webpage, that allows users to find specific information.

All users noted that it was difficult to find the specific requirements, since they had to read through different sections to find the information needed.

For the second portion of my research, I used an empathy map to understand how people currently feel about the terms and conditions and what I can do with the Apple’s website to impact their decisions.

This revealed that most users do not read the terms and conditions and that they are difficult to understand.

Key Insights

This research uncovered mostly negative feelings about how companies display user data on websites. Many of the plots were extremely on the negative side with many of the participants noting that they never read terms and conditions at all, something that is relatable to many.

Another significant point was the difficulty in readability of the terms.

Users noted that the terms and conditions were often littered with difficult terms that made it hard for them to read and understand the policies that were put in place. These negative feelings were emphasized in my preliminary online research, where studies have shown more than half of adults only sometimes or never read the terms and conditions. (Pew Research Center, 2019).

With my redesign, my focus was 3 main interactions.

Accessibility

A well-designed page can make the terms and conditions easier to read and understand, improving accessibility for users. Clear formatting, concise language, and logical organization can all contribute to a more user-friendly experience.

Transparency

Redesigning the page to highlight key terms and important information can increase transparency. Users are more likely to trust a company that presents its terms openly and honestly, without burying critical details in dense legalese..

Engagement

Incorporating interactive elements, such as clickable sections with explanations, can encourage user engagement. When users feel more engaged with the terms and conditions, they may be more likely to read and comprehend them.

Lessons Learned

Lessons Learned

Redesigning Apple’s legal webpage to enhance data transparency involves creating a user-centric experience that prioritizes clarity and empowerment. By simplifying legal jargon into accessible language and integrating interactive elements—such as drop-down menus, summaries, and a organized navigation bar—users can better understand their rights and manage their privacy settings.

This emphasis on data transparency is essential in fostering trust between users and companies, especially in a larger tech companies that manage large amounts of  personal information. When users have clear access to how their data is used, they are empowered to make informed decisions about their privacy. This proactive approach aligns with Apple's core values of privacy and sets a standard for accountability in the tech industry, ultimately strengthening the relationship between Apple and its users. In an era of data breaches and misuse, a transparent legal framework is not just beneficial—it’s vital for maintaining credibility and trust in a competitive market.
